As current health and safety guidelines find us unable to gather this October to raise critical funds for breast cancer research, we come to you with urgency.

With your support in Los Angeles over the past three years, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) has made tremendous progress in advancing lifesaving research toward the prevention and cure for breast cancer. However, the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is threatening tomorrow’s breakthroughs in breast cancer research.

As you know, LA Goes Pink is inspired by the life of Los Angeles attorney, wife, and mother Liz Smagala Tate. Together we have honored her earnest belief that the only way to achieve a future without breast cancer is to unite around research. In 2013, at 37 years old, Liz was diagnosed with stage IV triple negative breast cancer, just three months after the birth of her son Lucas. Because of research, Liz was able to see her son’s first birthday. When she turned 38, Liz turned her final birthday into a fundraiser to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation—and she has made an impact on BCRF’s mission every year since.

Liz’s legacy is paving the way for extraordinary progress. Since 2018, LA Goes Pink has enabled the work of BCRF-funded researcher Dr. Heather McArthur, the Medical Director of Breast Cancer Oncology at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles. This year, we are humbled to pay tribute to Liz’s memory by naming Dr. McArthur’s research award in her honor: The LA Goes Pink Award in Tribute to Liz Smagala Tate.

In this video, Dr. McArthur shares details of her current progress—and what’s at stake. Unless we can close the gap in funding that we currently face, researchers like Dr. McArthur may have to abandon promising projects that are currently in motion, bringing our momentum—and the discoveries that come with it—to a dangerous halt.
